J. Humberto Lopez
Senior Economist, Latin America & the Caribbean Region

Humberto Lopez is Senior Economist in the World Bank's Office of the Chief Economist of the Latin America and Caribbean region.

Previously, Mr. Lopez spent five years as a country economist in the Bank's Central America Department, where he worked on operational aspects of the PRSP and HIPC initiatives, and two years in the Poverty Department of the World Bank, working on pro-poor growth and on poverty and social impact analysis.

Dr. Lopez has published on issues related to fiscal policy, optimal currency areas and real exchange rate misalignment, international business cycle synchronization, armed conflict and development, and pro-poor growth.

Before joining the Bank permanently, Mr. Lopez was a Professor of Economics at the University of Salamanca (Spain) and a Visiting Professor at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge.

Dr. Lopez received a B.A. degree from University of the Basque Country, where he studied economics. He then studied at the University of Warwick (UK) where he got his M.Sc. (1991) before attending the European University Institute of Florence (Italy) for his Ph.D. in Economics (1995).

Mr. Lopez is a national of Spain. He was born in Bilbao on May 11, 1965.
