Lead Economist for the Operations and Policy Unit
Dan Biller works as Lead Economist for the Operations and Policy Unit, in the Sustainable Development Department of the World Bank's East Asia and the Pacific Region. Prior to his appointment, he was the Environment and Natural Resources Program Leader in the World Bank Institute, managing and delivering training on the economic aspects of environment (including urban issues), natural resources and sustainable development in Latin America, Africa, Middle East and Europe. From 1999 to 2002, he was a senior economist at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (France) working on Natural Resource Management, the Economic Aspects of Biodiversity, Agriculture and Environment, and Sustainable Consumption. Prior to this appointment, Dan worked at the Fundação Getúlio Vargas (Getulio Vargas Foundation - FGV, Brazil), the Universidade Santa Úrsula (Santa Ursula University - USU, Brazil), and The World Bank. He managed projects in natural resource management and environment, infrastructure (water / sanitation, urban and energy), mining and hydrocarbons and macroeconomics. He was also country economist for Angola. He has extensive field experience in Latin America, East Asia, Angola, and Burundi and has worked in the Middle East and Eastern Europe as well. As Professor, Dan taught Natural Resource Economics, Financial Derivatives and International Economics. In 1996, he was appointed to the technical committee of the Summit Conference on Sustainable Development in the Americas, focusing on energy and forestry. Dan Biller received his Ph.D. and M.S. in Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his B.S. in Economics with a minor in Geophysics from the University of Kansas. His Doctorate fields include Natural Resources and Environmental Economics, Econometrics, Industrial Organization and Economic Development. He has over 30 publications in different issues related to environment, natural resources, and infrastructure.
